HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I am super existed that I made it to 2018, new beginnings right? What better way to start the new year than with a food blog post to dust off all the cobwebs that have been here. Yes, I am aware it might not be appropriate to say happy new year in February.
On the 28th of December my family and I went for dinner (kinda like my brothers post birthday celebrations) to this beautiful restaurant just before you reach Nanyuki. For all who dont know, Nanyuki is my home town and to find this gem around made my holiday. I had heard of the place from my sister, brother and Alasafiri. I was a bit too excited that I ended up doing poorly on the vlog that I had planned for. If you did not know, I do have a YouTube channel, you can subscribe right here.
Anyway we made our way to Soames hotel and Jack bar which is 5-7 minutes from Nanyuki town, depending on how you are driving. Fun fact, The hotel used to be a European settlers, Jack Soames farm house, thus the name Soames hotel and Jack bar. Who doesn’t like a bit of history?
As you enter the hotel, you have the reception area right next to the entrance and a sitting area where you can wait for a table, for your room to be sorted out or just to take a breather. My sister Kat and I took it as our backdrop for our Instagram photos.
Inside it feels homely as if you are at your mothers bestfriends house. The ambience is warm and inviting which is fantastic for chilled out kinda-day.
The hotel has a BREATHTAKING view of Mt. Kenya. I am the most unfit person you’ll meet and that view made me want to hike up the mountain, I am dead serious!
Now to the best part of my evening : THE FOOD!
I have one of the worst sweet tooth ever! Its so bad that I once tried to add sugar to my beef stew; yeah I know, crazy right? Lets just say It wasnt such a good idea.
The food here I must say was delicious. The only down side I had with the food (I tasted everyone food btw) was that they used too much butter while cooking.
I had a steak and Guinness pie which was DELICIOUS! You cant actually taste the Guinness in the pie which was good for me because I am not a bear person. The food presentation when its brought to the table is just perfection. The saute potatoes are put on the side of the plate with some greens and the stake is in a “soup bowl” with a handle and the pie on top. I always say if it doesn’t please your eyes then it shouldn’t be in your stomach so the presentation for me was just perfect.
As much as I loved this meal I must say the saute potatoes were a bit too dry for me and they did use a bit more butter than I would have wanted but all in all it was a fantastic meal.
Both my mum and sister had the sticky baby back pork ribs and the presentation of the food was absolutely phenomenal. Whoever came up with the idea of serving food on a chopping board was a guinius especially if the chopping board was this beautiful.
The ribs were soo juicy and tender. They poured over a sweet and sour sauce on top of the ribs that makes you want to lick your fingers when you are done. Even the salad looked yummy enough to eat and that’s a big thing for me cause I never eat salads AT ALL!
My brother went for fish. He had a Pan fried fillet of red snapper. Honestly, this was my least favorite of all the meals. They used too much butter which ruined the whole dish. That’s a bummer!
The presentation though was simple but BEAUTIFUL! The fish was on top of the saute potatoes and the green veggies. There is something about a clean food presentation on a white plate that pleases my eyes.
This was my favorite meal of the day. I obviously tasted everyone’s dish and this was soo good and soo much better than my own food. My eldest sister had the well done sirloin steak with garlic butter and mashed potatoes. The steak was on top of the mashed potatoes with gravy on the side and some green veggies. On top of the steak was the garlic butter. The steak was juicy but the butter was a bit overpowering.
All in all Soames hotel and jacks bar is an amazing place. The history around it, the coziness and the breathtaking view of Mt Kenya did it for me. The food presentation was just beautiful; you eat with your eyes first which is a huge plus for me. The only down side was they use too much butter in some of their food but I think that can be fixed by politely asking them not to.
So if you are ever in Nanyuki I totally recommend the Soames hotel and jacks bar! Perfect place for dinner with the family or friends.
